Kahanist hate-site taken down

Longtime JWN readers might remember this October 2005 post about a hate-spewing website called "Masada 2000", which incited its readers to many kinds of violence-- especially sexual violence-- against Jewish people who dared to speak out against the expansionist policies of the government of Israel. They even listed, and incited hate against, Jewish people whose "crime" was to sign petitions against the Apartheid Barrier!

Then, more recently, the M2000 hate-mongers took on Richard Silverstein, a very dedicated Jewish-American peace activist who lives in Washington State and has a number of blogs, including Tikun Olam-תקון עולם: Make the World a Better Place. Richard wrote about it here...

When I had written about M2000, I huffed and puffed that "someone" should try to get M2000 site taken down from the web. Richard did something about it. Today I got this email from him:

I don't know whether I can take credit for this but I filed a complaint w. Bsinet.net, Masada2000's webhost 3 days ago & the site has been down now for 2 days. I'm delighted to report this to you. Of course, I don't know how crazy the site owners & their allies may get towards me. I guess I should anticipate some kind of reaction at some point. But we've got to fight back against this intimidation.

Of course, they'll be back up again at another host before long. And we'll be watching, won't we?
Yes, Richard, we will.

And thank you so much, Richard, for having followed up on contacting the site's web hosts with your complaint. You have made the WWW a noticeable safer place for all of the 8,000 Jewish people of conscience who were listed on that site. (Who included, as I had written earlier, a number of my other friends.)

I don't entirely agree---this site, repulsive as it is, has had a paradoxically strengthening effect on the Jewish left. It set out to isolate and intimidate Jewish critics of Israel's actions, but the fact that it now has to list 8000 people should be a big encouragement for us. Perhaps we should be aiming to provide them with many more names! I did feel intimidated when I first appeared on it, but I now view it (as I know other people do) as something of an honour to be listed. Of course, I may have been lucky not to have received anything worse than Kahanist spam as a result of appearing there.

The funny thing is that if one of the site's supporters hadn't had such an urge to taunt me by e mailing me with the link to my listing I wouldn't ever have seen it and the site would still be up.

Maybe they'll just keep their mouths shut next time...Hardly a chance of that happening.

I'd like to let yr readers know that if they ever see the site up & running again to let me know either through Helena or my own site (linked here). And if they find out or know anything about the specific owners of the site that would be useful info as well.

Meanwhile I better put on my flak jacket!

I just have to ask. With respect--how is asking for more information about those that ran M2000 and when it comes back up--stop the hate?

If there is a hate campaign against those you believe to be hateful--are you not in danger of falling into the same trap?

Would not taking the high road be better? I personally dont agree with shutting down sites that I may disagree with because it opens a pandoras box and sets whatever group as a sort of e-police.

But if your going to do it--then would not a more subdued post be more appropriate to the peace your attempting to spread? IE: we are sorry for our misguided fellow etc... and then expain what was done?

Rather than any type of post that could be miscontrued as gloating and only cause a "flak jacket" responce?

Just a thought..............

it's kinda exciting that the host of the "SHIT List" was so easy to pressure; i'm a bit surprised that it wasn't hosted by a strong ideological supporter...

but let's not get too excited by the 8,000 number. sure, much of the list is composed of fabulous anti-Occupation jews (friends of mine among them), but the compilers are so far to the right that their criteria are pretty odd.

i mean, henry kissinger is on the list. and i hope no one is mistaking him for anything but a pro-Occupation shmuk.

so i'd rather take heart in the fact that there are more and more anti-Occupation jewish groups cropping up worldwide, and more of a willingness among anti-Occupation jews to move from opposing the israeli government's actions to questioning and rejecting zionism as such.

oh, and just to take the cheap shot: anyone who takes their name from the folks who "religious zealot" was coined to describe (and thinks their murder/suicide pact was a great idea) really shouldn't criticize anyone ever.
