I'm in Cambridge, Mass., thru Tuesday. (Taking part in a panel discussion at MESA Monday evening on blogging the Middle East-- along with Juan Cole, As'ad Abu-Khalil, and Abu Aardvaark.) It has examined the level of corruption in 163 countries and here is some of the most interesting results: 1. The top three countries (Least corrupt) are Finland, Iceland and New Zealand. 2. The UK holds position 13. 3. The US holds position 22. 4. Ireland holds position 19. 5. Chile is less corrupt than the US !!!! 6. UAE is least corrupt Arab country holding position 31 followed by Qatar & Bahrain. 7. Kuwait holds position 46 and Saudi 77. 8. Syria hold position 97 and Iran 106. 9. Interestingly, Lebanon has improved its position by 14 places since Syria left the country, so no surprises there J 10. The most corrupt Arab country, wait for this !!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! !, is Iraq (oh what a surprise). In fact Iraq is third from the bottom of the table (position 161) beaten only by Myanmar and Haiti (never mind, maybe next year we'll beat them). It is all Saddam's fault of course. I learned quickly that Africa and moslem countries are the worst. No surprises there. Mix absolute power, with semiliterate clerics (Musharaf dixis) and that is it. On a related note India comissioned study on the satus of Indian moslems and surprisingly the results are that Indian moslems are poorer and less educated that the average in India. They are essentially Pakistani. Good to hear from you Dominic also, even if today it was the Paksitani in you speaking. Oh, other news, the tollerant Dutch decided to outlaw the burka in public as a threat to security and integration into Dutch society. Enough said. Comment from... Transparency International has published its report called CPI (Corruption Perception Index). It has examined the level of corruption in 163 countries and here is some of the most interesting results:
