Concerning the recent massacre of a family on the beach in Gaza, I am not sure how familiar people are with the suffering of this extended family, but last year young teenage cousins were in a nearby field working and were hit by a shell. All three boys lost legs above the knees and all are now in wheelchairs. And so it goes.....

What do we tell them about justice and terrorism? What do you tell anyone in Gaza? It just keeps getting worse and no one cares.

Tell Gazans to stop launching Kassams themselves and there will be no missiles flying back at them. Is it that freaking hard to understand that if you lob something over to your neighbor they will lob something at you?

For those who are not surprised to hear this, I do have a lovely ocean front villa in Baghdad for you.

As for events in Israel, there was a brief moment when it appeared that peace might break out, through the efforts of President Abbas to hold a referendum of Paestinian voters on the two-state plan contained in the so-called prisoners' agreement. However, those on both sides -- Israeli and Palestinian -- whose political futures depend on a continuing state of warfare quickly swung into action to start up the spiral of violence once more, in the hope of preventing any real moves toward a settlement.

There is a long history here. For years, whenever negotiations or some other breakthrough appeared to be near, an Israeli official would announce that the government would be glad to meet with the Palestinians, provided there are no security incidents. Someone from a Palestinian militant group would obligingly respond with a rocket attack or a commando raid, at which point the Israelis would indignantly insist that they cannot meet with the Palestinians if such things are going to happen. Or the roles could be reversed.

The point is that this struggle would not have continued for so many years if there were not people on both sides who benefit from keeping it going. If Abbas is willing to press ahead with the referendum despite the return of fighting between Israel and Hamas, it may mark him as a different sort of leader.
