Iraq: the best sense yet

This was my first attempt to post this text, which is from a speech given November 4 by my old friend Ghassan Salameh. But I only had a highly imperfect version of it, as published in The Daily Star (Lebanon). Shame on them! Evidently editing standards there must have plummeted since I worked there back in 1974-75...

Anyway, I've now cut out the whole substance of this post, and direct you to the next post, where a better version of the text is now posted. (Sadly, though, I couldn't do the whole line-break thing for such a long text there.)

Still, it's an interesting text. Check it out. I'm keeping this one here as a placeholder only because Advanced Calc already posted an interesting Comment on it, which I didn't want to lose.

From an historical prospective, the process in England was: respect for traditional rights (Magna Carta)--> rule of law--> no one is above the law (including the ruler)--> creation of Parliament-->no manipulation of Parliament by the ruler-->Parliamentary circumscriptions relect the population-->expansion of the electorate to include all adult men and women. So I think that that is the minimum required in Iraq.

In the case of Iraq, you would want safeguards for each minority (I am thinking here of the Kurds and Assyrian Christians) and where a minority is a majority in a certain area, the ability to set up its own non-sovereign entity where its culture and language can be exercised.

Other aspects that are important for Iraq is the tribe and religion. It is important to have a forum for tribal and religious leaders as part of Parliament to enable them to express their opinions on legislation. This could be similar to the unelected Senate in Malaysia.
