The other 96

How about if Americans started taking seriously all the calls in our national discourse for global democratization?

How about if our government started acting as though it represented only (a minority of) the 4 percent of the world's population that has US citizenship?

How about if we started to figure out ways to give a real voice to the other 96?

What makes you think that the ROTW [Rest of…] is interseted in American-style democracy. To me, a better model for many multi-cultural societies is Switzerland (think Afghanistan and Iraq). If you listened to all the people saying certain countries are not ready for democracy because they are multi-lingual, multi-cultural and have no single dominant religion, then I guess Switzerland is not ready for democracy. I also prefer a Parliamentary system with separate Heads of State and Government as you get rid of that Hail to the Chief nonsense.

In any case, the US is a bad example for the world with its Ideology of Patriotism and you did not grow up in the States so you should know what I mean. An example of a country without that ideology is Canada.

Calc, I totally agree with you. In fact, I wd also say that US-style "democracy" doesn't either aqeuately represent the views of, or serve the needs of, US citizens them- (our-)selves. This first-past-the-post business here means that massive numbers of people-- quite frequently, the majority--aren't represented at all by the person who's elected. I need present only one case: W. But actually, the non-representativity riddles the whole system.

Does Switzerland have a National Endowment for Democracy, I wonder? Maybe they could come here and impose a better system on us? I could be their Ahmed Chalabi....
